The tide cut off the walk
The route to a gannet colony became a rescue operation.
Overseas tourists walking toward Cape Kidnappers became trapped between rising water and steep cliffs shortly before 11 am on the Thursday described in the police release. They stopped where they could remain clear of the tide. Police, Surf Lifesaving and Coastguard responded. An inflatable rescue boat reached the shore and transferred the group to Coastguard, which brought them to safety. Police credited earlier joint exercises and highlighted warnings about tides, walking times and fitness.
Outcome: Everyone was brought back safely; nobody was injured.
Lesson: Check tide times and the complete return journey before coastal walks, not just the outward route.
