Nine hours through darkness to reach two travellers
Volunteer rescuers walked through the night to reverse hypothermia.
Two foreign tourists were rescued in Nelson Lakes National Park during severe conditions. A three-person LandSAR team, including a doctor, walked for about nine hours through darkness to reach them. Police credited the volunteers with reversing hypothermia and said the pair were unlikely to have survived much longer without assistance. Later police interviews found they lacked adequate equipment, clothing and experience for their walk. The release places the rescue in the preceding weekend but does not specify an exact incident date.
Outcome: Both tourists survived after rescuers reached them.
Lesson: Choose a route that fits your experience and carry protection for worsening conditions.
