A social-media hotel bargain is not a confirmed reservation.
Singapore Police reported complaints about hotel packages advertised through social media between mid-December 2021 and December 2022. Customers allegedly paid by bank transfer or PayNow but did not receive bookings. Investigators believed a suspect was connected to more than 900 unfulfilled bookings, with reported losses exceeding S$1.3 million. The release announced a charge planned for 2 August 2024. It does not establish a conviction, recovery of money, or that all customers were overseas travellers.
Outcome: Police announced an intended charge; the release supplies no trial verdict or reimbursement outcome.
Lesson: Confirm reservations directly with the hotel using independently found contact details. Prefer authorised sellers and payment protection.
